Wealthy businessman Horation Hunnewell donated the land and construction costs for the Wellesley Town Hall which was completed in 1886. Hunnewell's wife's maiden name was Welles, and the town honored him by taking the name Wellesley when it separated from Needham in 1881.

The building originally functioned as both the town's library and seat of government—replacing an older Town Hall—but currently it houses only municipal offices as the library has moved to a different building. Wellesley Town Hall was added to National Register in 1976.
