Pennsylvania Hospital

Pennsylvania Hospital was the first hospital in the United States, and was actually in existance well before the colonies declared their independence. Founded in 1751 by Benjamin Franklin and Dr. Thomas Bond, its original purpose was to provide care for the sick poor and the mentally ill.

The Pine Building, designed by Samuel Rhoads and built on land donated by Thomas and Richard Penn, housed the hospital in its earlier years. During the Revolutionary War, the hospital provided medical attention to both American and British soldiers.

The building itself is a combination of Georgian and Federal architecture. It's most interesting feature is the circular surgical theater at the heart of the structure. Lit from above by a circular skylight, doctors performed surgeries here between 1804 and 1868 as medical students watched from the seats above. Also impressive are the main double staircase and the medical library.

Over the years the hospital gained a reputation for innovative treatment in maternity care and of the mentally ill. The hospital is still active, although the Pine Building is no longer used for medical purposes. Attached to a newer, modern hospital building, it is open to the public and tours are available.
