The Elms is one of the many Gilded Age mansions in Newport, Rhode Island. It was designed by Horace Trumbauer and modeled after the 18th century Chateau d'Asnieres in France.

The Elms was built by Pennsylvania coal baron Edward Julius Berwind. After summering in a relatively small cottage at Newport for a few years, the Berwind family decided they needed a larger, grander setting for their large society parties. Construction began in 1899 and was completed in 1901. The Elms served as the Berwind's summer home until Edward Berwind's death in 1936. Berwind willed the mansion to his sister Julia Berwind who continued summering there until her death in 1961.

The Elms was bought and restored by The Preservation Society of Newport County in 1962. It is now open to the public. Tours are given several times throughout the day. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1996.
